Mold is a very diverse organism, is very common, and is all around us. Mold/fungi and humans typically exist peacefully together; however, it becomes a problem when it begins to grow on structural building materials. The problem that arises is many sided- mold can not only weaken/degrade the substrate(material) as it feeds on it, but as it is feeding it is reproducing, potentially at very rapid/exponential rates. The last main issue is that while mold is feeding and expanding, it is spreading spores throughout the air. Outdoors this isn't an issue as there is plenty of room for spores to disperse and high concentrations do not develop. Indoors, air isn't as mobile and this can lead to much higher concentrations of mold in the living areas. There is more to mold than meets the eye, literally. Just because you can see only a small area of mold growth on the wall this doesn't mean that there isn't more mold hiding below the surface or within the wall (this is usually due to leaky pipes).
